September 2000 Concerts

Midwinter Masterpieces: "The Band & the Bard" - Concert #3
Saturday, September 2 - 7pm, Bruce Mason Centre
Sunday, September 3 - 2pm, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell
A series of three concerts to lighten the dark midwinter, with international conductors, principal players from the Auckland Philharmonia, and a selection of favourite classics accompanied by readings and music from three of Shakespeare's most popular plays. Russian conductor Vladimir Verbitsky conducts the Auckland Philharmonia with soloists Christine Mori & Jennifer Seddon-Mori (Principal and Sub-Principal Flute, respectively, with the Auckland Philharmonia). The programme features Schubert: Symphony No 1; Vivaldi: Concerto for Two Flutes; Borodin: In the Steppes of Central Asia; Shakespeare: Reading from Romeo & Juliet by Raymond Hawthorne of Auckland Theatre Company; Tchaikovsky: Romeo & Juliet. "A Night in Vienna"
The Royal & SunAlliance Series is the Auckland Philharmonia's major international concert series for the year.

Russian conductor Vladimir Verbitsky conducts the Auckland Philharmonia and Viennese violinist Karin Adam in a programme featuring J Strauss: On the Beautiful Blue Danube; Berg: Violin Concerto; Mozart: Symphony No 40 in G minor; R Strauss: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (Till Eulenspiegel's merry pranks). Thursday, September 14 - 8pm, Auckland Town Hall
American conductor Daniel Hege conducts the Auckland Philharmonia and Canadian violinist Corey Cerovsek in a programme featuring Copland: Danzon Cubano; Dvorak: Violin Concerto in A minor; Liadov: The Enchanted Lake; Lutoslawski: Concerto for Orchestra. Ord Minnett Jazz & Cabaret Series, Concert #2 "Peel Me a Grape"
Saturday, September 23 (8pm) & Sunday, September 24 (7pm), Aotea Centre
Canadian jazz vocalist and pianist Diana Krall is rapidly becoming the hottest jazz sensation in the US. Recent Grammy Award winner (Best Jazz Vocalist), she possesses a seductive voice described as "wild honey with a spoonful of scotch" and plays the piano with a "crisp, swinging soulfulness". She has an intimate singing style, a magnetic stage presence, and the songs she chooses have her own unmistakable sharp and witty interpretation. Diana joins the Auckland Philharmonia for two concerts (on Saturday night with a repeat performance on Sunday night). Chilean conductor Rodolfo Fischer conducts the Auckland Philharmonia in a programme featuring Grieg: Holberg Suite; Hamilton: Leukos (Light) (world premiere); Schubert: Symphony No 4 in C minor, Tragic; Chavez: Sinfonia India. October 2000 Concerts

PhilharMania!
Monday, October 2 - 11.30am & 7pm, Auckland Town Hall
The Auckland Philharmonia, with conductor Marc Taddei and narrator Charles Pierard, presents two one hour concerts designed to entertain children aged 6-11 years and their families. Held during the school holidays, the programme features the full versions of:
Rossini: William Tell
Eve de Castro-Robinson: Kihikihi (the cicada)
Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf
To compliment the concerts, various musicians from the orchestra present "The Music Zoo", an interactive opportunity for children to watch and listen to a range of orchestral instruments and ask questions of the musicians. "Romantic Finale"
The Royal & SunAlliance Series is the Auckland Philharmonia's major international concert series for the year.

American conductor Alasdair Neale conducts the Auckland Philharmonia and New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun in a programme featuring Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto No 5 in F, Egyptian; Rachmaninov: Symphony No 2 in E minor. The Auckland Philharmonia Auction of Fine Wine is an auction that grandstands some of the best wines New Zealand has ever produced. Many of these wines have never been, or are no longer available on the retail market. Ord Minnett Jazz & Cabaret Series, Concert #3 "Songs My Mother Sang"

Matt Cattingub returns after a highly successful debut with the Auckland Philharmonia last year. He is joined by local vocalist Caitlin Smith in a show celebrating the music sung by his mother, jazz great Mavis Rivers. Matt is a consummate musician, versatile as a pianist, saxophonist, vocalist and conductor, and famous for his musical arrangements. Rudd Watts & Stone Celebration Series, Concert #1 - "Spanish Fiesta"

A series of four "themed" concerts with international conductors and soloists. "Spanish Fiesta" features the Auckland Philharmonia conducted by the orchestra's Music Director, Miguel Harth-Bedoya and soloist Justine Cormack, the orchestra's Concertmaster. The programme features: Turina: Danzas Fantasticas; Lalo: Sinfonie Espagnole; Gimeniz: Intermezzo from Las Bodas de Luis Alonso; Granados: Intermezzo from Goyescas; De Falla: Spanish Dance from La Vida Breve; Rimsky-Korsakov: Capriccio Espagnol. Rudd Watts & Stone Celebration Series, Concert #2 - "Beethovenfest"
Friday, November 10 - 8pm, Auckland Town Hall
A series of four "themed" concerts to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Auckland Philharmonia. "Beethovenfest" features the Auckland Philharmonia conducted by Jonathan Grieves-Smith with violinist Adele Anthony. The programme begins with reviews and letters from Beethoven, followed by Beethoven's Violin Concerto and Beethoven's Symphony No.7. Twinings Proms Down Under, Concert #4 - "Proms Down Under"
Friday, November 24, Saturday, November 25 - 8pm, Auckland Town Hall
A series of four "themed" concerts to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Auckland Philharmonia. "Proms Down Under" features the Auckland Philharmonia conducted by Christopher Bell with soloist Deborah Wai Kapohe and poet Sam Hunt. The programme features a mixture of traditional British Proms music including Parry, arr. Elgar: Jerusalem; Wood: Fantasia on British Sea Songs; Elgar: Pomp and Circumstance, combined with an exciting selection of New Zealand music (plus a reading by Sam Hunt). The New Zealand music includes Tutira mai (arr. Ritchie); Hamilton: Millennial Maggie; Heenan: Hine e Hine; Dorothea Franchi: Do-Wack-A-Do Ballet Suite; Heenan: Kihi Kihi from Maori Suite; Pokarekare ana; Farr: The Great Sea Gongs (pt 1); Ritchie: Coming To It.
