The Philharmonie
Built according to plans by Hans Scharoun, and
completed in 1963, the Philharmonie is one of the most unconventional
buildings in Berlin. Widely admired for its bold design, it forms both
the main feature and the heart of an area in Berlin known as the
Cultural Forum. The Chamber Music Hall was added to the Philharmonie
in 1987, designed by the architect Edgar Wisniewski, based also upon
original plans by Scharoun.

The Building
The Philharmonie, designed by Hans Scharoun, was
opened on the 15th October 1963 with a concert by the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan. About 270 concerts
take place every year in the main auditorium, which seats 2,440. This
is where the Berlin Philharmonic give their concerts, as well as guest
orchestras, chamber formations of all varieties, and soloists. The
Chamber Music Hall, with a capacity of 1,180 , is host to around 240
concerts a year, ranging from smaller orchestral formations and
chamber music groups to recitals. The design of both halls is based
upon the concept of "music as the centre of attention", with
the concert podium in the centre of the hall, and the audience seated
in terraced blocks surrounding the stage on all sides.
Architecture as a musical
instrument
Architecture as a musical
instrument - the Berlin Philharmonie has achieved just that. The three
interlinked pentagons represent a move away from the infinite
regularity of a square foundation, to the most human of all symbols,
the pentagon, as an age-old symbol of life. These three pentagons,
each encompassed by another, yet all three intertwined, symbolise the
intention of this site; the perfect harmonisation of man, music, and
space. This intrinsic quality cannot be ascertained from the outside.
Even if grey and white, folded tiling had been used to cover the
building, as was originally planned, the exterior would have always
maintained an element of incomprehensibility to the observer. As it is
on the inside as well; there is no one standpoint, neither in the
foyer nor in the hall, where the building can be observed and
comprehended as a whole. Not until a series of views and perspectives
has been observed, or until we move about in its space, do we begin to
see a lucidity in what seemed to be chaos, or do we begin to sense an
unusual order and a unique logic in what otherwise seemed to be pure
chance. Form, rhythm - a metamorphosis takes place. The spatial
dimensions of length and height have been wed to time, the dimension
of music. A space has been created for a society of free people, to
carry their cultural and artistic intentions into the world, a world
that is being formed of their own hand; in ever changing directions.
And in ever changing sounds......

Friends of the Philharmonie
The Association of the Friends
of the Philharmonie
The Association of the Friends of the
Philharmonie is a non profit organization founded in 1949, then with
the particular goal of erecting a new home for the Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra. Their initiative and provision of a considerable amount of
funds, were decisive factors leading to the building of the
Philharmonie, the finishing of the Chamber Music Hall, and the
purchase of harpsichords and concert pianos. A bust of Karajan by
Professor Baier (Hallein) donated by the association was unveiled in a
special ceremony, and now has its place in the south foyer of the
Philharmonie.
Now that these goals have been achieved, the
association has the following objectives: the further furbishment of
the Chamber Music Hall, supporting special artistic projects of the
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, providing support for young
musicians, the upkeep of orchestral traditions, and the maintenance of
records relevant to the history of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
The association remains in very close contact
with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. It organises three gala events
each season, in which members of the orchestra usually participate.
Regard is often given at these events to younger members of the
orchestra, and young musical talent. Reputable conductors and
soloists, amongst them Menuhin, Solti, Barenboim and Abbado, as well
as authorities in musicology have also spoken as guests of the
association.
Becoming a member of the
association is a chance to be part of the events surrounding the
Berlin Philharmonic. The minimum joining fee per year is 60 DM, and is
tax-deductible as a donation.
