The Himalayan Art Project

The Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation seeks to preserve the sacred art of the Himalayas through this site. It contains over one thousand Tibetan Buddhist thangkas, dating from the Twelfth to the Nineteenth Centuries CE, and over 35 thangkas of the Bon religion from the Fifteenth to the Nineteenth Century. Yung Drung Bon, still extant, was predominant in Tibet before Buddhism was introduced in the Eighth Century. The site has a well-done search feature, and images are viewable at different magnifications. The site also has photo galleries of Tibet, Nepalese paintings, a description of the growth of Buddhism, and links to websites related to the project.

SunSITE Digital Collections

"The Berkeley Digital Library SunSITE builds digital collections and services while providing information and support to digital library developers worldwide." This is a large site, which hosts many types of information, without a commitment actually to archive it. The Advanced Papyrological Information System, aerial photography of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Yosemite National Park, the Last Jews of Lybia, Mapping the Icelandic Genome, and an Online Medieval and Classical Library are highlights.

Face of Russia

"Rus, Rus, are you not racing on
like a spirited troika that none can pass?

Everything on earth is flying by;
other nations look askance,

but step aside to let you pass."

Uncredited, from the introduction page of this survey of Russian history, by PBS.

The Moonlit Road

Ghost stories and strange folktales of the American South, told by the region's most celebrated storytellers. They are fittingly macabre and surprisingly contemporary, with some basis in "urban legends." While there are American Gothic descriptions of blood and guts, the subject matter is suitable for children past elementary school age.

The Lost Heavens - The Yao Legend

A small but well-constructed site about the shamanistic Yao tribe of southeast Asia. The site shows ritual artifacts used by the priests and shamans of the wandering tribal mountain people in their religion, which is a structured belief in ancestors, Taoism, and spirits.
