From the Editor:

Welcome to the Summer 2000 issue of the Arts4All Newsletter, the International Issue.

Ponder questions of free speech and the arts outside the US, as posed by a veteran of a few - ahem - learning experiences, see and hear a movie going far back into our collective past, learn about one man's travels in search of core wisdom (and some astonishing photographs).

Go with a young American painter to Prague and points East, learn of a Sengalese movie on young love and an American movie on a young girl's complex adolescence, and find where underground musicians go to be heard. Visit outstanding websites for the arts and humanities around the world.

We are pleased to introduce in this issue a new department. The Drift will be in a state of gradual change from day to day, similarly to our listings: Breaking News (formerly Bulletin Board), and Performance and Exhibition Schedules. Come back over the summer for updated listings for stages, concert halls, galleries, museums, public events, etc., plus news items and nuggets from the worlds of the arts and technology. And in celebration of our first year of publication, we'll offer recaps and selections from the Newsletter's first twelve months.

Curious about the fall Newsletters? A preview is here at Coming Attractions. Enjoy!

Perspective: Forbidden Theater

by Paul Foster

The playwright tells stories of cause and effect: free speech in unhospitable territory followed by disapprobation, death threats, possible defenestration.

Perspective: Sugar Pill or Tonic?

by Anne M Carley

Will wrapping yourself in the United States flag do much for your travel ensemble, next time you jet off to faraway lands?

Mythic Silhouettes

by Meryl Joseph

The movie represents my personal and long-term search to explore photographic imagery as a window to the unconscious, to the mystery behind reality.

An American in Kosice

by Jim Murray

One year out of art school, he went to live in Eastern Czechoslovakia. It was becoming Slovakia, and he was becoming a painter.

Kind of like Gene Kelly's character in An American in Paris, only very different.

Poetry

by Barbara LeBel

Barbara LeBel is back, this time with two poems.

To add to the experience, we invited her to record her readings of them.

You can follow along, or just close your eyes and listen.

Mossane:
Helen, as
Seen through African Dust

by Edie Ellis

Promised to someone else,
the village beauty falls in love
with a boy her age, instead.

Movie Review
Sweet Thirteen in Richmond

by Michael Nicolella

Nina Dickens plays Nina, in a non-documentary, semi-scripted film by David Williams. Her foster mother, Lillian, plays Lillian. And so forth.

Nina is coming of age, surrounded by opinionated friends and relatives. She takes off for a few days, to get away from it all.

Notes from the Underground

by David K. Roland

He was just passing through Grand Central Station, when he came across a reason to stick around a while.

Also reviewed by Edie Ellis: a movie from Austria, Northern Skirts

Magou Seck as the title character in Mossane, directed by Safi Faye.
